Project: 1972 BMW 2800

Sometimes great opportunities come along that you just have to act on. We have been working on a handful of products for the BMW 2500/2800/3.0S/3.0Si/Bavaria sedans for a little while now (header and exhaust, turbo exhaust manifold and a few ancillary items like replacement gas pedals, etc), and a development car just fell right in our garage. Literally.

I'll spare you the details about how I met the owner almost two years ago, but lo and behold we got a nice 1972 2800 German grey market sedan for a very reasonable price. It's quite a nice car. The previous owner took good care of it and was making his way through a number of the systems, so it's a prime candidate for a product test mule.

Some of the details on the car:

1972 2800 Sedan with high compression Euro 2.8l SOHC I6 featuring twin Zenith 2bbl downdraft carburettors and vintage Judson Magneto. ZF 4 Speed Manual Gearbox, 3.64:1 Rear Drive. Macphereson Strut front suspension and Coil Over Shock rear suspension. Ate four piston front calipers on vented rotors and two piston rear calipers on solid rotors.

Agave Green Exterior over Tobacco Brown Interior, German gauges, Euro turn signal indicators, no side marker lights. No seatbelts (at ALL, full seatbelt delete package!!) – one feature that won't remain stock.

This car is in such great shape that it still retains the pressboard undertray fully intact. It's the first factory undertray that I have ever seen in any condition. We plan on patterning it and making these as a product offering. And no, they will not be made of factory oil soaked cardboard unless you're a coupe owner and need things to be as OEM as possible ;-) .

The exterior shows a few signs of being dinged and suffering some impacts of minor spot rust. A few little oil leaks that seem easy to resolve (mainly from the timing cover and oil pressure sender as recent service included oil pan and rear main seal replacement).

We'll be starting with development of the exhaust system and then work our way to the downpipes and a set of shorty headers. Interested in products for this vehicle? Check out our survey and weigh in on your interests. We'll develop in the order of popularity of products. And we're just testing out that survey site, so we don't have the ability to thank you for participating – so thanks in advance!
